Sometimes, life can throw you unexpected curveballs. Take for example, an accident at home involving you or a loved one. It can happen when you least expect it, but once it happens, there are decisions that you will have to make in regards to your care. If you need to be hospitalized, your recovery needs increase dramatically and you will be faced with an overwhelming amount of medical decisions.
One of those decisions may be where to go for your rehabilitation needs. A discharge planner is going to provide you with a list of rehabilitation centers that they recommend. The issue with these “recommendations” is that it may seem they are your only option and many patients fear that other rehab centers may not be covered by their medical insurance. This could not be further from the truth! Choosing a rehabilitation center for your own personal needs is essential in ensuring a complete, comfortable and successful recovery. Your choice is also a patient right given under the federal Medicare guidelines.
It is important to consider the following when choosing a rehab facility:
- The Location– is the location of the facility convenient for you and your family?
- Patient care– are you comfortable with the staff and do you see yourself building a relationship with the entire interdisciplinary team? (nursing, therapists, social service, administrative ect…)
- Cleanliness & comfort– Is the environment clean, comfortable and welcoming?
- Expectation/Communication
Your CHOICE only has to be based off of your personal desire, not the list a discharge planner hands to you. Remember your right to choose next time you are faced with a medical decision and make sure you always do what is the best fit for YOU.
