Away From Home for the Holidays

December 20, 2016 by Steven Tyer

The holidays are a time of a variety of celebrations, traditions and most importantly spending time with family. Fortunately, for those who have no local family, they have us.

Here at Copley at Stoughton, we consider all our residents family and one of the most rewarding parts of our job is to ensure no one experiences loneliness, particularly during the holidays.  Our top-notch staff works diligently throughout the year to create a number of thoughtfully planned festive activities to accommodate all our residents.  It is well documented the benefits of socialization for the elderly, and during this time of year it is especially important.

Here are some of ways we celebrate the season:

  • The Winter Mural – each season our residents work together to create a mural in our main lobby. This beautiful collaborative piece is on display for everyone to enjoy. We celebrate the unveiling with refreshments and invite both residents and their family and friends to attend.

  • Carolers – each year we welcome various choirs from surrounding communities who entertain our residents and staff with a variety of holiday favorites.
  • The Holiday Party – the annual Magical Holiday Open House is a MUST. Complete with food and entertainment, it is truly an event everyone enjoys. If a resident can’t make it to the party, we bring it to them!
  • Holiday cards – we’re blessed to be in such a loving and caring community. Our residents receive cards from people they may not know from all over the area and it truly lifts their spirits.
  • Our Hanukkah party will take place on December 27th at 11:15am and the lighting of the Menorah will take place during each day of Hanukkah at 4pm!
  • Family time – for our residents who do have family who can visit over the holidays, we offer a private dining room that can be reserved for a private celebration.

This is the season of giving and we’d like to think that we’re creating a memorable experience for our residents who aren’t fortunate enough to share the holidays with relatives.  We hope you agree.

From all of us at Copley at Stoughton, we wish you and yours a safe, happy and healthy holiday and a peaceful and prosperous New Year!

How Well Do You Know Your Insurance?

November 15, 2016 by By: Steven Tyer

Are deductibles, coinsurance, co-payments and out of pocket maximums all terms that make your head spin? If so, you are not alone. Believe it or not, many people are uninformed about their insurance coverage, particularly those approaching retirement.

Every day we discuss insurance with our guests and their families.  Upwards of 50% are shocked to know that their insurance has a deductible, coinsurance or co-pay.  More often than not we find ourselves explaining that it is not a Copley policy, but a policy of the insurance coverage they voluntarily choose.

Most commercial insurers such as Blue Cross Blue Shield and TUFTs as well as Medicare have some out of pocket cost.  These costs can range anywhere from $20-$100 per day for commercial policies and in 2016 $161.00 per day for days 21-100 under the Medicare program.  Supplementary insurance coverage such as Medex are plans that cover these types of charges but are an additional plan and premium on top of your original policy.

Whatever your insurance coverage is, please take some time to read all of the coverage details.  The last thing you need is any extra anxiety after an unplanned hospital stay caused by not knowing what your insurance covers.  If you are planning an elective surgery that may require post hospitalization rehabilitation care, Copley’s admission staff would be happy to assist you in verifying what your out of pocket costs would be.

The Choice is Yours

October 11, 2016 by Steven Tyer

Sometimes, life can throw you unexpected curveballs.  Take for example, an accident at home involving you or a loved one.  It can happen when you least expect it, but once it happens, there are decisions that you will have to make in regards to your care. If you need to be hospitalized, your recovery needs increase dramatically and you will be faced with an overwhelming amount of medical decisions.

One of those decisions may be where to go for your rehabilitation needs. A discharge planner is going to provide you with a list of rehabilitation centers that they recommend. The issue with these “recommendations” is that it may seem they are your only option and many patients fear that other rehab centers may not be covered by their medical insurance. This could not be further from the truth! Choosing a rehabilitation center for your own personal needs is essential in ensuring a complete, comfortable and successful recovery. Your choice is also a patient right given under the federal Medicare guidelines.

It is important to consider the following when choosing a rehab facility:

  1. The Location– is the location of the facility convenient for you and your family?
  2. Patient care– are you comfortable with the staff and do you see yourself building a relationship with the entire interdisciplinary team? (nursing, therapists, social service, administrative ect…)
  3. Cleanliness & comfort– Is the environment clean, comfortable and welcoming?
  4. Expectation/Communication

Your CHOICE only has to be based off of your personal desire, not the list a discharge planner hands to you. Remember your right to choose next time you are faced with a medical decision and make sure you always do what is the best fit for YOU.

At Copley at Stoughton we are contacted daily by pro-active future guests seeking information for planned elective surgery and also by family members faced with an acute situation and the need to make some immediate plans. Our goal is to reduce as much anxiety as we possibly can for our guests and families. Please feel free to contact Steven Tyer or Chris Simonson if you have any questions regarding the services Copley can assist you with.

Private Nursing Home Flourishes in Stoughton

May 6, 2016 by

Brought to you by The Boston Globe.

Copley at Stoughton is a private nursing home in Stoughton, one of the last in the state, according to Steven Tyer, its administrator. The 123-bed facility provides long- and short-term care and rehabilitation services, and has been in existence since 1994. Its majority owner is the Goddard Foundation, which was created with the assets of the former Goddard Memorial Hospital in Stoughton. We spoke with Tyer for this story.

Q. What makes Copley at Stoughton so unique?

A. It’s a standalone, one of the last locally owned and managed in the state. Most places are owned by giant corporations, but selling has never been an issue here. Goddard is solvent, and very committed to this. I came from a corporation, Wingate Healthcare, and was COO for years. Working here is harder than any job I’ve ever had; we’re doing it all on our own, and we’re very successful at it.
